CATE CONFERENCE AND CONVENTION

Thank-you for your interest in my workshop at CATE Convention presentation from spring of 2014. The stories are James Thurber's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and Doris Lessing's "Through the Tunnel." Both stories are published in The Language of Literature (McDougal Littell). Please let me know if you have any questions!

ALSO -- I have added another page that might be helpful. After the workshop, a couple of teachers asked me about punctuation in regard to quotes. I have created a series of samples designed to provide some clarity. Click on After Convention Addendum.

Workshop Title: Kiss Quote Quandaries Goodbye and Write Authentic-Audience Essays!
Session F 4:15-5:30 PM / Grade levels: 7-14 / Room: Crescent

Below are improvements to a simplistic quote that could have been found in an essay.

Notice that this first line includes a dialogue quote, possibly a thought dialogue quote.  But the speaker is not provided.

The cruel cold woke John up earlier than normal.  “I must get a fire going for my family” (102).

Below, the speaker (or thinker) has been added to provide greater clarity.

The cruel cold woke John up earlier than normal. He quickly decided, “I must get a fire going for my family” (102).

Just because a passage in a text is set up as dialogue or thought dialogue does not mean that it cannot be structured as a narration quote.  Below are two examples of chunked (not a full sentence quote) and embedded (inserted into the essayist's sentence) narration quote.

A narration style quote simply moves the story along.  No one is talking or thinking.

The cruel cold woke John up earlier than normal.  He quickly decided that he “must get a fire going for [his] family” (102).

The cruel cold woke John up earlier than normal.  He knew he had to “get a fire going for [his] family” immediately (102).
