HONORS PROGRAM AT ECC
I inquired on October 17, 2014 about adding an honors component to my English 1C class.  Apparently, professors are no longer given the authority to do so.  Ms. Williams provided a wonderful explanation of the honors option.

Below is a response I received upon inquiry:

Thanks for inquiring about this.  We actually do not offer honors credit for non-honors courses by contract.  The only students to whom we give this option are FYE students, since the FYE curriculum makes it impossible for these students to take honors sections of English classes (as FYE mandates FYE-cohort English classes).  Since yours isn't an FYE section, your student doesn't have this option.

Please encourage your student to join the HTP instead.   Our application deadline is October 31.  He can get information and application materials by going to the HTP webpage (accessible from the ECC main page), or by visiting the HTP office in SSC 102-F.

When I asked for further explanation of abbreviations and such, this is the information I received:

FYE is the First Year Experience program.  It is a separate program that students can join when they start at El Camino, and involves taking classes with the same cohort of students for the first year of college. FYE classes--like sections of English A, 1A, and 1C--are open only to students in FYE; no one else can enroll in them.

The Honors Transfer Program is the honors program that helps highly motivated students transfer--and prepare for transfer--by taking enriched, specially-designated honors classes.

If your student isn't already in FYE, it is too late for him to join. It isn't too late for him to join the HTP, though, as long as he will be at ECC for at least 2 semesters after this one.  Please feel free to refer him to me if he wants more information.  He can email me, or come by my office hours. I am in Humanities 221-H, and have hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30-1:30.
