QUOTE EXAMPLES FROM THIS EXCERPT (153; ch. 12):
This change in Jem had come about in a matter of weeks. Mrs. Dubose was not cold in her grave--Jem had seemed grateful enough for my company when he went to read to her. Overnight, it seemed, Jem had acquired an alien set of values and was trying to impose them on me: several times he went so far as to tell me what to do. After one altercation when Jem hollered, "It's time you started bein' a girl and acting right!" I burst into tears and fled to Calpurnia.
NQ: Scout felt indignant that "Jem had seemed grateful enough for [her] company when he went to read" to Mrs. Dubose (153; ch 12).
DQ: Jem's desire to scold Scout right after their visits with Mrs. Dubose made her consider, "Jem had seemed grateful enough for my company when he went to read to her" (153; ch. 12).
NQ: When Jem insists that Scout "started bein' a girl and acting right," she "burst into tears and fled to Calpurnia" (153; ch. 12).
DQ: Jem demanded of Scout, "It's time you started bein' a girl and acting right!" (153; ch. 12).
DQ and then NQ: Jem demanded of Scout, "It's time you started bein' a girl and acting right!" Feeling betrayed, Scout "burst into tears and fled to Calpurnia" (153; ch. 12).

Making sure you fix everything marked: Open your document on your computer and set your marked essay beside you. Have a highlighter ready. Go through all of the necessary corrections one at a time. Fix a problem on the computer and then highlight it on the hard copy paper. Always fix first and the highlight so you won't get confused. You will be able to see what you fixed more easily. If you mark the fixed items with a pen, your markings can get easily lost in the teacher comments. After you fix everything marked, go back through the paper to make sure that you caught all your errors. Don't ever rely on a teacher or peer to mark everything for you. Your paper is your responsibility.
Also, please use the check list. Don't check things off until you know for certain that you are in compliance.

Here are two examples of an introductory paragraph on courtesy suited for the “Mitty” essay. Other topics could be imagination or responsibility. You can also come up with something else that works for you. Notice that the example is the same for both intros, but the transition and the thesis differ. The transition must lead your reader to your thesis. Keep that in mind when you create your introductory paragraph. The transitions are red.
Having good manners helps people make friends and live together well. When someone breaches etiquette, people will react negatively. If a person, for example, belches loudly during a play, the members of the audience will not appreciate the distraction. If this happens repeatedly, they may feel quite perturbed. A person with good manners would move into the lobby until the burping subsides. People conversing during a movie have the same impact on others. Such rudeness is intolerable. But occasionally a lack of courtesy comes from people responding to the poor behavior as sometimes seen in works of literature. In “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber, the title character often experiences unwarranted hostility and disrespect because of his daydreaming, but Mitty’s imagination provides him relief from a boring life, so he should be admired.

People everywhere should pay attention to the people impacted by their inappropriate behavior, even those living in stories. In “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber, the title character often inspires reasonable hostility and disrespect because of his daydreaming, so Mitty should grow up and manage his life better.

A person with good manners would move into the lobby until the burping subsides. People conversing during a movie have the same impact on others. Such rudeness is intolerable.
