WHAT IS SEMANTICS?

Semantics can be understood as “the study of the relationships that exist among human beings, the word symbols they use, and the world they live in” (Potter 15).

I am not publishing the list of books we read because I am seriously concerned that some students will be given these books at home in order to "get ahead."  Doing this would put your student at a disadvantage.  Some of the way we learn about literary analysis is through mutual discovery and prediction.  If students read ahead, they will miss these experiences.

Students should not have much extra time to get ahead in their reading. First of all, they should be quite engrossed in their independent reading books.  I assign only 50 pages minimum of reading per week because I want students to be able to get credit for all their IR essays even if they have a super busy week occasionally that makes it hard to do much reading.  SSR alone should provide enough time for reading 50 pages.  The minimum is such a small number for those difficult weeks; it is not at all the goal.  I expect much more reading than that.  In all previous 10th honors classes, the requirement was 100 pages.  Students also have vocabulary to study and many large and smaller writing assignments, which can all be revised. There are always vocabulary lists that students need to study.
